Description
Silver FR 8mm fire rated reflective foil insulation
Fire-retardant, double-sided aluminium foil insulation with large 30 mm bubbles. Reflects 98% of radiant heat, BS 476 Part 7 Class 1.
Silver FR 8mm is a fire-retardant reflective insulation for roofs, ceilings and walls. It has 99% pure aluminium foil on both faces over an 8mm air-bubble core, with FR additive in the film layers. Its large 30 mm diameter bubbles add extra insulation, making it a step up from 4mm foil for hot metal roofs, warehouses and homes.
Need extra strength? See Silver FR Net 8mm with bi-directional reinforcing net, or the standard Alumix Silver 8mm Basic / FR insulation.
What is Silver FR 8mm reflective insulation?
Silver FR 8mm (product code AL-SL80-FR) is a five-layer reflective insulation. Its construction is 9 µm foil / 8 to 10 mm FR air bubble (30 mm diameter) / 18 µm foil / 9 µm foil. The aluminium faces reflect radiant heat and control vapour, while the bubble core adds a thermal break.
It is classified BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 and complies with EN standards, so it suits commercial and industrial projects with fire performance requirements.
Key benefits
- Reflects 98% of radiant heat. 99% pure aluminium foil on both faces.
- Fire rated. BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, with FR additive in all film layers.
- Enhanced insulation. Large 30 mm diameter bubbles.
- Five-layer construction, foil on both faces. Reflects heat from either direction.
- Dual action: heat and vapour control. Helps reduce condensation on roof sheets.
- Does not absorb moisture or support mould. Performance does not drop over time.
- No glass fibre, safe to handle. No itching or dust for installers.
- Lightweight and easy to cut and install. Saves space when installed.

Thermal performance: R-value by assembly
Reflective insulation works best when installed next to an air gap. The total system R-value depends on how many reflective air cavities are created in the roof, ceiling or wall.
| Assembly / air cavity | Winter (heat flow up) | Summer (heat flow down) |
|---|---|---|
| Roof / ceiling, one 25 mm reflective cavity | R 0.67 | R 1.07 |
| Roof / ceiling, two 25 mm reflective cavities | R 1.16 | R 1.96 |
| Wall assembly, 38 mm cavity, horizontal heat flow | R 0.92 (one cavity) / R 1.66 (two cavities) | |
Values are total system R in m²K/W. Cavity resistance calculated to BS EN ISO 6946 (ref. BS EN 16012) for an unventilated cavity with a low-emissivity surface (ε 0.02 to 0.03). Core product R 0.18 m²K/W applies to the product alone without a reflective air cavity.
Applications
- Roof underlay and metal roofing, over the purlins or under the rafters
- Ceilings and attic spaces
- Walls and partitions
- Warehouses, factories and metal buildings
- Residential and commercial buildings
- New build and renovation projects
How to install Silver FR 8mm on a roof or ceiling
- Measure the roof or ceiling area and work out the number of rolls needed for the total m².
- Set the purlins or rafters to the correct spacing.
- Lay Silver FR over the purlins or under the rafters, with the foil face toward the heat source.
- Fix with screws and cut to length, keeping the sheet taut.
- Seal all joints and overlaps with aluminium foil tape.
Air gap tip: for optimum thermal performance, install it facing an enclosed air gap so its low-emissivity surface can deliver the published R-value.
Testing and certification
Silver FR 8mm is certified to BS 476 Part 7 (Class 1), ASTM C 1371, ISO 8301 / ASTM C 518 and BS EN ISO 6946, with compliance to EN 13501-1. Test reports and certificates are available on request.
Frequently asked questions
What is Silver FR 8mm used for?
It is a fire-retardant, double-sided reflective insulation for roofs, ceilings and walls, used under metal roofs and in warehouses, factories, homes and commercial buildings.
Is Silver FR 8mm fire rated?
Yes. It is classified Class 1 under BS 476 Part 7 and complies with EN standards.
What is the R-value of Silver FR 8mm?
The product alone has a core thermal resistance of R 0.18 m²K/W. With reflective air cavities, total system R-values reach up to R 1.96 m²K/W in a roof with two 25 mm cavities (heat flow down), and a high thermal equivalent of R 4.38 m²K/W with two 75 mm air gaps.
How is Silver FR 8mm different from 4mm foil insulation?
It has a thicker 8 to 10 mm core with large 30 mm diameter bubbles, which gives higher R-values than the 4mm Bronze range.
What roll sizes are available?
Rolls come in 1.20 m and 1.35 m widths, with lengths from 10 to 40 m, covering 12 to 40 m² per roll.
Does it need an air gap?
Yes. Install it facing an enclosed air gap so the low-emissivity foil can deliver the published R-value.
