A metal roof is strong and long-lasting, but it does very little to stop heat. In summer the steel sheet soaks up the sun and radiates that heat down onto the people working below. In winter the same sheet loses warmth quickly. If your office sits under a metal roof, whether it is a site office inside a warehouse, a factory mezzanine, a steel-framed building or a portable cabin, metal roof office insulation is one of the most effective ways to make it comfortable all year.
Why metal roof offices get too hot (and too cold)
Most of the heat that enters a building through a metal roof arrives as radiant heat. The sun heats the outer sheet, the sheet heats the underside, and the underside radiates that heat into the room. Bulky fibre insulation slows heat conduction, but it does not reflect radiant heat, and it can be awkward to fit in the shallow space above an office ceiling.
The result is a familiar list of problems: stuffy afternoons, air conditioners running flat out, and cold ceilings in winter. Insulating the ceiling of the office, rather than the whole building, is a practical way to fix this and keep the cost sensible.
How reflective ceiling insulation works
Reflective insulation uses layers of aluminium foil to bounce radiant heat back towards its source. Save Cool foils reflect up to 98% of radiant heat. Sealed air-bubble layers between the foils add thermal resistance, and the whole product stays thin, light and easy to cut.
Reflective insulation works best when it faces an air gap. Each reflective air cavity adds thermal resistance to the roof or ceiling, so the total system R-value depends on how many cavities are created in the build-up. Keep the foil surface clean, unpainted and facing the heat source so it can do its job.
Save Cool ceiling solutions for metal roof offices
This category brings together our Save Cool ceiling products for offices under metal roofs and inside metal buildings. Both are fire-retardant (FR) formulated, water-resistant and non-fibrous, so there is no dust or loose fibre, and no mould growth or insect and rodent nesting.
Save Cool Mega 40mm Multi-Foil Ceiling and Loft Insulation
Our highest core R-value in the Save Cool range. Nine layers (five MTX aluminium foils and four 10 mm sealed air layers) make up 40 mm of insulation with a core R-value of 1.02 m²K/W. It is laid on top of ceiling boards and T-bar panels to keep the room below cool, which makes it a natural fit for an office ceiling under a metal roof.
Save Cool Triplex 25mm Thermal Break Reflective Insulation
A slimmer six-layer thermal break: three reflective foils, two 10 mm FR air-bubble cushions and a 5 mm EPE FR foam core, 25 mm in total, with a tested core R-value of 0.67 m²K/W. It can be laid over the ceiling or fixed behind metal cladding, and it is made for warehouses, factories and metal buildings.
Mega 40mm vs Triplex 25mm at a glance
| Feature | Save Cool Mega 40mm | Save Cool Triplex 25mm |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 40 mm | 25 mm |
| Layers | 9 (5 foil, 4 air-bubble) | 6 (3 foil, 2 air-bubble, 1 foam) |
| Core R-value | 1.02 m²K/W | 0.67 m²K/W (tested) |
| Radiant heat reflectivity | Up to 98% | Up to 98% |
| Roof / ceiling with one 25 mm reflective cavity (summer) | R 1.91 | R 1.56 |
| Roof / ceiling with two 25 mm reflective cavities (summer) | R 2.80 | R 2.45 |
| Roll width | 0.60 / 1.20 m | 0.60 / 1.20 m |
| Roll length | 4.00 / 6.00 / 8.00 m | 4.00 / 6.00 / 8.00 m |
System R-values are in m²K/W, calculated to BS EN ISO 6946 for an unventilated cavity with a low-emissivity surface. Core R-values apply to the product alone, without a reflective air cavity.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Mega 40mm when you want the highest thermal resistance in the range and have room above the office ceiling boards or T-bar panels.
- Choose Triplex 25mm when space is tight, or when you want to fix insulation behind metal cladding as well as over the ceiling.
Not sure which suits your building? Contact our team with the size of the office and the type of roof, and we will help you work out the right product and quantity.
Benefits for offices in metal buildings
- Reflects up to 98% of radiant heat from the roof
- Helps keep the office cooler in summer and warmer in winter
- Thin, lightweight and easy to cut and install
- Fire-retardant (FR) formulated
- Water-resistant and moisture-proof, with no mould, mildew or pest nesting
- Non-fibrous: no dust, no loose fibres
- Suitable for new builds and renovations
Where to install
For an office under a metal roof, the usual approach is to lay the insulation over the ceiling boards or T-bar panels, with the reflective foil facing the heat source and an air gap where possible. Triplex can also go behind metal cladding. Each product page includes step-by-step installation instructions, and you can see more installation methods on our Metal Building Application page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I insulate a metal roof office from the inside?
Yes. Save Cool Mega 40mm lays on top of ceiling boards and T-bar panels, and Save Cool Triplex 25mm can be laid over the ceiling or fixed behind metal cladding.
Is Save Cool insulation fire-retardant?
Both products are fire-retardant (FR) formulated. Please check the technical details on each product page for your project requirements.
Will it absorb moisture or grow mould?
No. Both products are water-resistant and moisture-proof, with no mould growth and no insect or rodent nesting.
What sizes does it come in?
Both are supplied in 0.60 m and 1.20 m widths and 4.00, 6.00 and 8.00 m lengths. Custom roll sizes are available for Mega 40mm.
How much will I need?
Measure the ceiling area in square metres and add a little for overlaps and cutting. If you send us the dimensions, we can confirm the quantity.
