DIY Applications

Can you install foil insulation yourself?
DIY foil insulation is a practical project for many homeowners, because reflective foil is lightweight and can be cut with basic tools. Alumix DIY foil insulation is designed for walls, roofs and floors without specialist equipment. The photos above show simple installations carried out step by step.
What you need
- Foil insulation rolls sized for your project
- A sharp knife or scissors and a tape measure
- Foil tape for sealing joints
- Fixings suited to your surface, such as staples or screws
- Gloves, eye protection and safe access equipment
Step-by-step: DIY foil insulation installation
- Measure the area and plan the rolls so seams overlap neatly.
- Prepare the surface by clearing debris and removing sharp edges.
- Cut the foil to size, leaving a small allowance for overlaps.
- Fix it in place with the reflective face toward the heat source, keeping the sheet flat and taut.
- Overlap neighbouring sheets and seal every joint with foil tape.
- Seal around pipes, cables and openings to keep the layer continuous.
- Check the result and patch any tears before covering it.

DIY tips and safety
- Tape every seam. It keeps the layer continuous and helps manage moisture.
- Keep the foil clean and uncrushed. An air gap helps it reflect heat.
- Work safely. Use proper ladders or platforms and follow local safety rules.
- Mind electrics and flues. Keep the required clearance around cables, lights and heat sources.
