Belgium Swelters: Nearly Every Station Broke Its June Record

Belgium recorded its hottest June day on record this week, with nearly all reporting stations registering all-time high temperatures for the month. The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) placed the entire country under orange heat alert as the heat dome parked over the Benelux region. Waterloo 2026 reenactments were cancelled for safety reasons, and the country’s healthcare system braced for heat-related emergencies. For a small, densely populated country with a mix of historic and modern buildings, the urgency of passive cooling has never been clearer.

Why Insulation Matters Right Now

Belgium’s building stock — from the brick townhouses of Brussels and Antwerp to post-war social housing and modern office blocks — was designed for the country’s temperate maritime climate. Thick brick walls that moderate winter cold become heat reservoirs in summer. Uninsulated or poorly insulated roofs in the hundreds of thousands of Belgian maisons mitoyennes (terraced houses) and maisons quatre façades (detached homes) allow solar heat to pour through the top floor. Reflective foil insulation is the simplest, most cost-effective retrofit: install it under the roof, and you immediately reduce radiant heat flow into the living space below.

Recommended Alumix Products for Belgium

BRONZE 4MM FR — 4 mm fire-resistant foil for roofs and attics. Belgian building codes (NBN standards) increasingly demand fire-rated materials in residential construction. BRONZE 4MM FR provides both fire safety and radiant barrier performance for home attics and roof spaces.

SILVER 6MM FR — 6 mm fire-resistant foil for walls and floors. Many Belgian homes have crawl spaces (vide ventilé) or cellars. Installing SILVER 6MM FR on the underside of the ground floor reduces heat ingress from the ground and improves overall thermal comfort.

MULTI+ 10MM — 10 mm multi-layer versatile roofing insulation. For the typical Belgian pitched roof with clay or concrete tiles, MULTI+ 10MM can be installed under the rafters, providing both a reflective barrier and a thermal break. Its slim profile is ideal for homes where loft space is used for storage.

DIY SUPERIOR — Mid-range DIY roll for home use. Belgium has a strong DIY tradition, and the DIY SUPERIOR roll is perfect for homeowners insulating their garage, workshop, or garden shed — a common upgrade during summer heatwaves.

BLH-B — Standard floor insulation roll. Suitable for Belgium’s many homes built on concrete ground slabs, helping reduce ground heat transmission in summer and providing improved insulation year-round.

Local Building Context

Belgium’s housing is characterised by high-density terraced housing in urban areas — particularly Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Liège — and detached or semi-detached homes in suburban and rural areas. Many homes were built before the first energy performance regulations in the 1990s and have uninsulated roofs. The country’s temperate reputation has left it underprepared for the 40°C days that are becoming a fixture of European summers. Alumix products are designed for straightforward retrofit in this existing building stock.
