How to install insulation ?
Livestock Application

Why insulate livestock buildings?
Livestock barn insulation protects animals from heat stress in summer and cold, damp conditions in winter. Poultry houses, pig pens, dairy sheds and other farm buildings are often steel-roofed, which means a lot of radiant heat gets in and condensation drips from cold metal. Reflective barriers from Alumix reduce radiant heat and help stabilise the temperature inside. The photos above show Alumix insulation installed in livestock buildings.
Benefits of livestock barn insulation
- Cooler buildings in summer. A reflective layer under the roof cuts the radiant heat that warms the space.
- Less condensation. A sealed layer limits dripping from cold roof sheets onto animals, feed and bedding.
- More stable temperatures. Steadier conditions support animal comfort, health and productivity.
- Easy to clean and install. Foil rolls are lightweight and quick to fit over or under the roof structure.
Where to install insulation in a farm building
Most of the benefit comes from the roof, where radiant heat enters. Fit the foil over the purlins in new buildings or under the roof structure in existing sheds, and extend it to the walls where extra control is needed. Our guides on insulation over the purlins and metal building insulation cover the methods in detail.
Step-by-step: installing insulation in a livestock shed
- Measure the roof and walls and plan the roll layout.
- Remove sharp edges and loose fixings that could tear the foil.
- Fix the insulation with the reflective face toward the heat source, keeping it taut across the span.
- Overlap adjacent rolls and seal every joint with foil tape.
- Seal around vents, lights and openings, while keeping required ventilation clear.
- Inspect the layer and patch any damage.

Tips for farm buildings
- Keep ventilation working, because animals need fresh air alongside insulation.
- Seal all seams so humid air cannot reach cold surfaces.
- Use fixings and layouts that stand up to washing and farm conditions.
- Follow local animal welfare and building requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does insulation help animals in hot weather?
Yes. Reducing radiant heat from the roof helps keep the building cooler, which lowers heat stress.
Which buildings can I insulate?
Poultry houses, pig pens, dairy sheds and other agricultural buildings can all benefit.
Will insulation stop dripping from the roof?
A well-sealed layer under the roof limits condensation forming on cold metal, which reduces dripping.
